The Amelia Island Plantation will host the 13th Annual Reggie Hunt Memorial Golf Marathon at the Oak Marsh Course on Wednesday, November 12, 2008. The event is the agency’s biggest fund-raiser of the year. It is held annually in memory of Reggie Hunt, a former Fernandina High School student athlete and 6 year participant in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida program, who died tragically as a teenager in an accident in August, 1996.
Participants tee off at 7:30 AM and play as many holes as they can throughout the day. They are supported by donors who make per hole pledges or defined contributions. At the conclusion of play there is a steak cookout with refreshments and awards. Prizes are awarded to the participants who raise the most money and play the most holes.
“We have an ambitious goal to raise $55,000.00 this year”, says Tom Oden, tournament chairman. “With support from sponsors, veteran players, and the new players that we must recruit, we can reach this objective.” Big Brothers Big Sisters in Nassau County relies on private donations for over half of its operating expenses. Donations are tax deductible and the money raised remains in the county.
“Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest and most successful professionally-supported mentoring organization in the world”, Oden added. “Our task is as simple as putting a caring adult in the lives of children who need them and want them. Our children show improvement on a wide basis from better grades to improved conduct in school and at home. The benefits are obvious. As our children grow with the help of a Big, they develop into more productive citizens.”
